Dune: Awakening
Dune: Awakening is an open world, third-person[1] survival MMO developed and published by Funcom Games. Dune: Awakening was announced at Gamescom 2022 and was made available for players to add to their Steam wishlist shortly after. Whilst a release date for the game has not been given, it has been announced that the game will be available on PC, Xbox Series X|S and PS5.[2]
Funcom later announced that development of the game was at a good stage, and that they would begin inviting closed beta testers for the game.[3] On January 9, 2024, Funcom created a TikTok account for the game, they have since shared numerous sneak peaks of the game including alpha footage.[4] Funcom regularly answers questions about the game and certain elements of it in their Discord server.
Synopsis[edit | edit source]
Dune: Awakening combines the grittiness and creativity of survival games with the social interactivity of large-scale, persistent multiplayer games to create a unique and ambitious Open World Survival MMO.[5]
Gameplay[edit | edit source]
Dune: Awakening takes place within the world of Dune as built by Frank Herbert, but does not follow the timeline of the book. The game combines open world survival with the large social interaction, allowing players to adapt their gameplay to their style of play. Taking inspiration from survival games such as Valheim, players will need to avoid attracting sandworms, seek shelter from sandstorms, and maintain their water and spice levels to succeed in the harsh desert of Arrakis.[6]
Dune: Awakening puts players in the position of "Sleepers", who wake amidst the desert of Arrakis, stranded with nothing but a dagger they have fashioned from a piece of scrap metal[7]. Players will have to fight the harsh desert of Arrakis and all of the dangers that lie within in order to survive. The game is set in the year 10199AG, which is approximately 8 years after the events of the Dune movie, but the game will not follow the events or canonicity of either the books or the movies.

- Yes, the game will be available on Xbox X|S at launch.

- There has been no announcement of this with Funcom being solely focused on next-generation hardware at the present time. Funcom has confirmed the game will be available for the PS5.
- When is Dune: Awakening coming out?
- It is currently unknown. Closed beta's are currently taking place.
