The storm changing the map of Arrakis.

The Coriolis Storm is one of the dangers on Arrakis and one of the main mechanics of gameplay within Dune: Awakening. The coriolis storm is caused by the winds of the open desert and amplified by Arrakis' own revolutionary motion and has the ability to change the surface of Arrakis each time it passes and as such, can modify the map that players are exploring. This can come in the form of hiding certain points of interests, or uncovering new points for players to explore.

This allows the developers to continuously update the map in different releases to ensure that players can keep exploring Arrakis[1]. Furthermore, the coriolis storm has the ability to destroy a players base if it is outside of the shield wall, even if they have a shield.[2]

Shifting Sands[edit | edit source]

The 'Shifting Sands' feature is one of the mechanics of the Coriolis Storm in the game, wherein once a week, the storm will remake the face of Arrakis, wiping out player outposts and revealing new hidden resource locations[3]. Any player base that is not built beyond the shield wall will be destroyed when the sands shift. If a player wishes to establish a permanent base on Arrakis, they are encouraged to do so beyond the shield wall where it will be safe from destruction.

Notes and Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • The coriolis storm is closely related to, and created by, the coriolis force found in physics. It is likely what influenced Herbert's naming of the storm.
